EDITORIALS

Farewell Editorial

Laurence G. Branch, PhD

The next issue of The Gerontologist is my last as editor. Starting in August, TG will be in the capable hands of Linda Noelker.

As I step down, I take pride in knowing that TG continues to be the highest rated GSA publication measured by the impact factor criterion provided by Journal Citation Reports/Social Science Edition for 2001. TG was ranked fourth on the composite impact factor, second in the total number of citations, and first in half-life of the cited articles, an indicator of the duration of the importance of the published articles. Additionally, TG has the largest number of subscribers of GSA publications, the ultimate criteria by which our work should be measured.

The number of manuscripts submitted to TG has risen for the third year in a row: we had 293 new manuscripts and 131 revised manuscripts submitted for review in 2001, and are on a pace to exceed that level for 2002. Our acceptance rate in 2001 was 25%, reflecting the high standards we have maintained. With a median editorial decision time of less than 6 weeks, we have achieved the turn-around time goals we set 2H years ago when I assumed the editorship.

To the authors: You have my respect and admiration. When the review process was not as smooth as you desired or the outcome not as pleasant, I shared your disappointment. I also shared your satisfaction when your peers recommended publishing the results of your hard efforts. You have my gratitude for enhancing our collective knowledge and understanding.

To the Section Editors (Eleanor McConnell, the Practice Concepts Editor; Robert Binstock, the Book Review Editor; and James Sykes, the Audiovisual Editor): It has been a genuine pleasure working with professionals of your caliber. Always correct, always thorough, always succinct, always on time. I will always be grateful.

To the Editorial Board: Your reviews, advice, and counsel have been invaluable. You handled each issue as it arose with professional correctness, personal courtesy, and good humor. Thank you.

To the reviewers: The Assistant Editor and I are indebted to you. Your professionalism, competence, and dedication to gerontology have been exemplary.

To Dave Brown, my Assistant Editor: Thank you. Your skills and commitment have brought honor to both of us, and to TG.

To the support staff at GSA: Without you, no issue would ever have been published.

And to you, the readers of TG: Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. I sincerely trust that we have served you well.

Editor, The Gerontologist
